Power Outage and an Old Card Catalog

Yesterday, I had planned a busy day of locating sources for classes that were coming in to conduct research in our SLMC.  But, the area had a widespread power outage and school was cancelled.  I thought I would some time at the school to pull out the resources anyway.  Every time I wanted to locate something, I forgot that the computers were down.  WOW!  How I missed the old days of looking at a typed card in the beautiful wooden box known as the “card catalog.”   I still have one, but now it is used to house miscellaneous objects.  I looked at it and remembered the librarians who worked tirelessly at getting those cards in the Title, Author, and Subject categories. What time it must have taken for those cards to have been typed up so neatly?  As much as I love technology, it is days like this, I miss things done “old school.”
